What is PSI Max – Definition of terms
If you are familiar with the power tool industry, you may have noticed that some brands of tools have a maximum voltage of 18V, while others have a maximum voltage of 20V. On the surface, 20V seems to be more powerful than 18V. The reality is that 18V is the same as 20V Max.
When it comes to pressure washer PSI ratings, it can be just as confusing. First, let's answer the question, "What is PSI max?" It's a measurement of the actual maximum pressure that a pressure washer can produce momentarily. Before we get too far with our pitchforks and torches, here's a relevant number.
By knowing the maximum PSI, consumers can understand the potential risk of property damage or personal injury. We're very keen to understand this type of risk.
Different measurements from different manufacturers
The root of the problem is that most manufacturers don't use that measurement. The two most common certifications are from PWMA (Pressure Washer Manufacturers Association) and CETA (Cleaning Equipment Trade Association). While there are some differences in the testing methods of the two organizations, they both use averages of PSI and GPM that are more representative of your actual experience while pressure washing.
Another problem with PSI max is that it is highly exaggerated compared to other brands' certified PSI ratings. In some cases, we've found it to be over 30% higher than actual working PSI.
While we wish that only one standard would work, it doesn't. Now, keep an eye out for the PSI max on the packaging or on the product website. When you see it, look for a description of typical working PSI when comparing pressure washers. What looks like the best pressure washer may actually not perform as well as you think it does.
