Cordless chainsaws have come a long way in terms of performance. With the 14, 16, and 18-inch models available for several years now, we've been wondering when the larger farm and ranch grades will arrive. At GIE 2021, Stihl announced the MSA 300, a 20-inch battery-operated chainsaw. This chainsaw appears to be available overseas now, albeit with a 14-18 inch stem.
Without a doubt, the fact that Stihl has made his way into the 20-inch farm and ranch level with brushless chainsaws is significant. It's one of the three most powerful models out there, with DeWalt and Greenworks Commercial also releasing 20-inch models at the same time.
Stihl knows chainsaws, and there are plenty of reasons to be excited about this launch beyond performance. For one, the Stihl MSA 300 has three cutting modes, so you can prioritize performance or run time. It's not something we've seen on other cordless models. The LED screen shows which mode you are in as well as power on/off, chain brake position and low oil alarm.
There is also a new battery to talk about. The AP 500 S is an advanced battery pack capable of delivering more current than Stihl's other AP series batteries. It was this battery that started Stihl's ability to bring this high-performance chainsaw to market. Of course, the chainsaw can use any Stihl AP battery, but only the AP 500 S will perform at its peak performance.
