Stihl's 135 platform is dedicated to helping professional lawn care professionals make the transition from gas to battery power without compromising performance. As part of this system, the Stihl FCA 135 and FCA 140 battery powered edger options break new ground.

First and foremost, the FCA 135 and FCA 140 are Stihl's first dedicated battery-operated edgers. They have one as an accessory for the battery KombiSystem, they just don't have any standalone options.

Performance is the focus of these tools. They match the FC 91 and FC 96 in the Stihl product line and have the exact same performance specifications. Both edgers have 28 cc motors, which gives us an idea of the type of power these batteries and brushless motors produce.

Like most professional edgers, straight axes have higher torque to define edges, while curved axes have higher speeds to hold them.

Another complication was that Stihl's 135 platform moved away from the tethered battery system to a direct plug-in battery. This adds weight to the tool without having to hang it from your belt or back.

The bare-bones FCA 135 is priced at $369.99, and the corresponding FC 91 is priced at $379.99. The FCA 140 is a bigger price gap at $419.99 compared to the FC 96's $469.99.

Of course, if you are just getting started, you also need to consider the cost of batteries and chargers. However, simply adding the tools yourself doesn't come with a huge premium.
