Ryobi 18V One+ HP Brushless High Torque Impact Wrench Review PBLIW01

Posted on May 10, 2023 by

Ryobi One+ HP Brushless High Torque Impact Wrench delivers powerful nut breaking power with ease

One of the big challenges with cordless impact wrenches is power. Wireless "high torque" isn't always the same as pneumatic. The Ryobi 18V One+ HP Brushless High Torque Impact Wrench is designed to hit harder and change the way you think about cordless functionality.

advantage

  • excellent power level
  • very manageable weight
  • comfortable grip
  • Triple Beam LED

shortcoming

  • no major disadvantages

Ryobi Cordless High Torque Impact Wrench Performance

Ryobi's HP Brushless High Torque Impact Wrench boasts an impressive 1,170 foot-pounds of breakaway torque and 700 foot-pounds of tightening torque. The brushless motor provides high speeds up to 2,100 RPM and shock rates up to 2,800 IPM. When you need more finesse and control, low and medium speeds produce 900 RPM and 1,400 RPM, respectively.

Its power is impressive compared to others on the wireless end. It wasn't that long ago that we were talking about the first high-end model to break 1,000 foot-pounds for the first time.

Compared with pneumatic, the torque is reasonable and can be called a high torque impact wrench. You'll still notice a big difference at speeds that are much lower than your air impact.

The big question we all want to know is… how well does this impact wrench perform under pressure? To do this, we used our Gearwrench 3/4-inch electronic torque wrench to tighten five Grade 8 1/2-inch nuts on the test bench to the maximum 600 foot-pounds they could handle.

Using the selector button on the bottom, I switch to Assist mode, which provides some extra control once the nut is loose. As expected, the Ryobi PBLIW01 Impact Wrench passed every test without a problem…it wasn't even hot!

From these results, we have no trouble believing this impact wrench can handle even the toughest lug nuts or frozen bolts on most vehicle, trailer, and construction fasteners you'll come across. However, if you start dealing with heavy equipment repairs and fasteners larger than 1-1/2 inches, you may find that 1/2-inch drivers are capped. At that point, it's time to start looking at 3/4 or 1-inch drives that can better handle heavier workloads.

auxiliary mode

The 4-speed motor has low, medium and high settings plus an additional assist mode. This helps keep nuts and bolts from falling out of you, or worse, flying away in a way that could cause injury.

Instead, the motor automatically stops after a few revolutions, even if it never receives a shock.

When advancing, rotation stops after about 5-7 strokes to help you avoid over-torque and potential damage to fasteners and equipment.

size and weight

Compared to some other similar high-torque impact wrenches we've seen, this one with Ryobi's high-performance 4.0Ah battery weighs less at 6.63 pounds.

Its textured rubber grip feels a bit bulky on the larger side, but it helps maintain control of the tool during hammering torque.

In terms of size, its head measures 8.25 inches.

led lights

Ryobi has brought back their triple LED lighting system for this impact wrench. Three LEDs surround the driver, illuminating your work area more than foot-mounted lights.

Additional features

  • variable speed trigger

Ryobi 18V One+ HP Brushless High Torque Impact Wrench Price

The Ryobi High Torque Impact Wrench is priced at $199 bare-bones and comes with a 3-year limited warranty. As we write this, there are no kit options on the market, but keep an eye out as this may change in the future.

the bottom line

Ryobi did a lot of things right in the design of its cordless high torque impact wrench. It has legit high-torque power and control options that make a difference when you use it. Whether your needs are on the automotive side or larger construction fasteners, this impact wrench delivers the power you need through the convenience of battery power.
