Ryobi updates its 18V cordless trim router with more speed options
Handheld routers are great for making decorative cuts in wood, but they can also do more than you might think. From beveling, planing and leveling wood pieces, the convenience of the compact tool gives you endless options, especially when working in tight areas. The updated Ryobi 18V Cordless Trim Router shares many similarities with the older model, however, it offers a few surprises under the hood that we think you'll love.
Ryobi 18V Cordless Trim Router Performance
- Power supply: Ryobi 18V battery
- No-load speed: 20,000-30,000 RPM
- Collet Size: 1/4"
- Motor Type: Brushed

Ryobi's last compact router, the model P601, only had a fixed speed of 29,000 RPM. In contrast, the PCL424 compact router gives you more speed versatility by incorporating a 6-position variable speed dial. It allows setting from 20,000 RPM to 30,000 RPM. This can help you if you need to adjust the speed to the project at hand. We're a little surprised that Ryobi didn't update the motor from brushed to brushless, though. Hopefully we'll see that option on a future model.

- Model: Ryobi PCL424B
- Dust Port: 1-7/8 in.
- Weight: 2.6 lbs. (naked), 3.6 lbs. (with 1.5Ah battery)
- Dimensions (L x W x H): 5.5 x 4 x 7.25 inches
This model is also 20 percent more compact than Ryobi's previous generation, weighing just 3.6 pounds. Its compact design is ideal for one-handed and two-handed operation. The removable D-base has a quick release lever for quick adjustments, and it also features a micro-adjustment dial for fine-tuning the depth of cut. If you want to keep your work surface free of debris, simply connect the vacuum to the included adapter to reduce dust output.

the bottom line
Overall, the Ryobi 18V Trim Router is a compact, easy-to-use option for light to medium-duty routing tasks. For one thing, it doesn't have as many bells and whistles as some pro-level options. On the other hand, this router offers serious DIYers and woodworking enthusiasts plenty of power at a price that won't break the bank.
