The Ridgid R45171 10-Inch Compact Table Saw, available in November, is the company's latest entry into the table saw market. This updated Ridgid model has many of the same features as the previous table saw product, but fits in a more compact frame and bracket.
Same specs, smaller body
The interesting thing about Ridgid's new table saw is that, on paper at least, it looks very similar to the R4513 model. The old model had a full-size body and plenty of power. Like the previous model, the Ridgid R45171 has a 120-volt, 15-amp motor, but it's in a more compact size. Both saws can push 5,000RPM.
This table saw also has a 26-inch cutting capacity for wider materials. It has a micro-bevel adjustment for angled cuts, which would be a good thing if it worked similarly to the full-size model. This table saw also features a soft start for a quiet and smooth start (the Ridgid R4517 lacks a soft start).
This saw also comes with a compact folding stand. The stand raises the saw to a comfortable working height and easily folds away for compact transport and storage. Ridgid builds the table and stand out of solid cast aluminum, and the table saw includes a steel roll cage for added durability.
It retails for $299 at your local Home Depot in November. Like most Ridgid tools, this one comes with a lifetime service agreement.
final thoughts
If the Ridgid R45171 performed as well as the full-size R4513 in our December shootout, it should be in pretty good shape. The specifications of both saws look almost identical. The full-size Ridgid table saw is the best when it comes to power, but it's too early to know if both use the same motor. Conventional wisdom, though, says that for a compact model, you need to downsize the motor a notch.
Ridgid's previous model did a good job with fencing, and we're hoping to get the same model or a slight upgrade. Retail price is $299, which is $200 less than the full-size model. Obviously, the stand has more of a minimalist design than the full-size model. The R45171 also has a shallower depth of cut, but only 1/4". We won't know all the details until we actually get our hands on it, but for its price, the Ridgid R45171 might be worth the pros looking for a compact table saw. Price It's also very interesting for DIY enthusiasts to jump to the Pro level.
