It happens – a product is tested to death, but something happens in the real world that doesn't happen in other tests, and the product undergoes a recall. It's all about the safety of consumers. This time we focus on the Kobalt lawn mower recall and the Greenworks lawn mower recall. We all know Greenworks is the company behind Kobalt lawn mowers. When one goes, the other goes too.
The model being recalled is a 40V twin blade lawn mower, which is the best initial design for such a product to hit the market. Specifically, we are looking at the Greenworks 25302 and the Kobalt KM2040X-06. The Greenworks cordless mowers in question have date codes from April 10, 2014 to July 17, 2015. Kobalt models include models dated April 14, 2014 through May 14, 2015. There are roughly 28,000 units between the two.
The essence of the problem is that 12 total "incidents" and 5 fires reported possible injuries. The problem came down to a short circuit on the board. In fact, we have a problem with our Greenworks GMax 40V Twin Force mower where folding the unit engages the motor if the battery is installed. This is what we mentioned in the shootout, we hope this is an isolated incident. Obviously, this is not the case. While our specific findings are off the list, it's certainly within the realm of possibility.
