Powerhorse 3000 PSI Pressure Washer (87035) Review

Posted on May 5, 2023 by

Pressure washers are the mainstay of property maintenance. The cost of hiring a contractor often causes homeowners and business owners alike to purchase their own units. Unfortunately, expectations are often dashed when the equipment they buy falls short of the professional performance they thought they would take home. Northern Tool offers the Powerhorse 3000 PSI Pressure Washer for $349.99. It's an attractive price for a pneumatic pressure washer, but will it leave you with heartache that you're getting your money's worth? Let's take a closer look at what it has to offer.

Assembly only took about 10 minutes. It took me longer to go to the shop to get 10W 30 oil for this unit than it took to assemble it. All it takes is a wrench and the instructions are clear. Once assembled, the gun and delivery hose can be connected without tools. You'll need a wrench to help connect the source hose, though.

If you can bypass the lawn mower engine, the Powerhorse 3000 PSI Pressure Washer will be super easy for you to maintain yourself. Just the ability to use a lawn mower should give you confidence that you can use the system without consulting an expert.

Powerhorse 3000 PSI Pressure Washer Build Quality and Design

Pressure washers vary widely in two areas: build quality and power. When it comes to Northern Tool's great-value Powerhorse 3000 PSI Pressure Washer, there are definitely some trade-offs to keep the price down. The trade-off doesn't mean poor performance.

The frame and handle are made of steel pipe for durability. There are plastic parts everywhere, but everything that needs metal is. In fact, not all parts of a pressure washer are metal and still work. Commonly used chemicals such as harsh cleaners and chlorine gas are highly corrosive and damaging to bare metal. That's why you see soap storage jars made of plastic. The designers made a smart move by placing the water tank at the bottom of the device. Any spillage will miss other parts of the engine and help reduce corrosion.

familiar engine

The engine is very similar to a lawn mower engine, so you'll find the same areas of plastic on your Powerhorse 3000 PSI pressure washer as you would on a typical lawn mower. The air filter housing is one of them. The tank can be moved anywhere, and Northern Tool used metal on this model.

There are some long-term build quality tradeoffs. Foam handle covers can degrade quickly due to a combination of sunlight, water, and any chemicals you may have used in the system. Powerhorse mounted the nozzle between the upper frame on full plastic. It's supposed to last a few seasons, but it won't take too long to interrupt it. I'm not quite sure why the designers chose to hold it with plastic rivets instead of bolts. I would prefer to use plastic and avoid corrosion, but in the long run this is a part you want to consider single use.

business power

Spears were a surprise. For a unit like this, the Powerhorse 3000 PSI Pressure Washer comes with a pretty solid business end. It also unscrews in the middle for easier storage. This means that if one end fails or breaks, you may be able to order a smaller, cheaper part instead of replacing the whole thing.

The design seems to be intentionally simplified. Engine components are easy to fix. Oil changes, filter cleaning and access to the carburetor were no problem. To prolong the life of all our small engine tools, we always stick to 93 octane gasoline to avoid problems.

3000 PSI will handle most pressure washer related tasks, but the most aggressive ones. 2.5 gallons per minute is almost a mid-range volume. I tried a few different apps that were common to what we do at Parker Street Ministries. Vehicle and lawn mower cleaning is a breeze with the Powerhorse 3000 PSI Pressure Washer. It's powerful enough to take care of our Hustler ZTR or Husqvarna M-ZT 52 zero-turn mowers after a morning mow. It's also great for washing our vans. Just add some car wash cleaner to your soap pot.

Mobile car detailers can easily take advantage of the unit. The handle is removable, leaving a low-profile pressure washer that can be semi-permanently attached to a trailer and taken to any job site. Parking your car in a safe location and covered or in a garage means it's ready to go.

Other uses

Property maintenance is also within the cab of the Powerhorse. Cleaning concrete sidewalks and driveways is an easy task for it. It is also valuable for us to clean fascia, soffits and building exteriors.

This is an excellent power level for paint prep. We have a commercial grade pressure washer that can start chewing through the lumber that was used to build the homes in the communities we serve in the 1920's. The Powerhouse 3000 PSI Pressure Washer cleans the exterior and removes loose paint without damaging wood.

Conclusions and Recommendations

The Powerhorse 3000 PSI Pressure Washer will be a great choice for DIYers, homeowners, auto detailers, and property managers. It's not quite a full-on professional commercial pressure washer, though. Light to moderate users should expect years of use from this system with proper engine maintenance.

Priced at $299.99, the system is the perfect balance of value and quality for this class. This is the perfect solution for maintaining our property and vehicles. When the volunteer team comes in, it's an easy system to learn and use that doesn't require me to oversee or provide training 24/7. For anyone who has used a small gas engine, the on-board instructions will certainly suffice.
