Three things were important to make Milwaukee's high-output batteries produce more watts: 21700 Li-ion cells, electronics upgrades, and battery pack construction upgrades.
When we say the Milwaukee Super Charger was born from the fusion of battery and charger technology, it's not just a statement. Batteries without a high output upgrade can't handle super fast charge rates, they revert to fast charge times.
It is important to note that the 3.0 Ah high output battery pack charges at fast charger speeds, even though it is a HO pack.
Here's the breakdown:

Currently, you need to buy the Milwaukee Super Charger separately for $149 with a 5-year warranty. As the line of tools utilizing High Demand batteries grows, it will be interesting to see if the Super Charger is included in any kits, perhaps as part of a dual battery HD kit.
We're also expecting a multi-port charger somewhere in the future. NPS 20? We'll have to wait and see.
Whether you should buy one depends on the batteries you use. Definitely consider this if you're shopping for a more powerful M18 Fuel tool that uses a high-demand battery. But if you mainly use M12, 2.0 Ah and 5.0 Ah battery packs, you are better off with Rapid Charger.
