Kobalt updates its 24V cordless 6 1/2-inch circular saw with surprising new features
As Kobalt updates its original 24V-running cordless tools, the goal for the next generation of models is to offer a more compact package without sacrificing performance. Today we're taking a closer look at the Kobalt 24V Cordless 6 1/2" Circular Saw and seeing how it compares to the original.

For starters, you can find an updated saw model number KCS 124B-03, which is a replacement for the KCS 6524B-03. It won't compete with or replace the XTR 7 1/4" version (KXCS 124B-03), which maintains its status as Kobalt's top cordless option.
A brushless motor turns the 6 1/2" blade at 5500 RPM. The previous model ran at 5400 RPM, so the overall speed has been increased for faster cutting.
On the other hand, you lose a little bit of power. First generation models cut up to 2 7/16" at 90°, matching some 7 1/4" saws. The updated model has a maximum capacity of 2 3/16, about 1/4 inch less than our previous model. Capacity is 1 5/8 inches at 45°.
In terms of consequences, the difference is minimal. The saw is still good enough to cut 2x as much material in one pass at 90° and 45°. It's also powerful enough to cut three stacked sheets of 3/4" (technically 23/32") OSB subfloor or plywood.

ergonomics

While we had no complaints about the size and weight of the original saw, the newest Kobalt cordless 6 1/2-inch circular saw managed to shed about 1/4 pound. Barely, it weighs just 6.5 pounds, and the 4.0Ah battery makes it a very manageable 8.3 pounds. The Kobalt could have used a plastic blade guard like many of these saws to save more weight, but we prefer metal for more durability, and we're willing to go with the slightly heavier weight that comes with it.
The handle is designed not to deviate too much, maintaining its straight positioning from the main handle to the front pommel. The pommel is big enough to fill your hand, and the entire handle section has a generous amount of rubber overmolding.
Adjustment

The miter adjustment uses a standard clamping lever, but there is no 45° angle stop like some saws.
The blade depth adjustment is very different and we like the design. You can adjust the depth by pinching the release instead of the clamp lever. Even for those who demand precision, there are plenty of detents to lock in depth.
As for measuring depth, you'll find the markings directly above the adjustment mechanism exposed as you change the depth.
dust control

Instead of attaching a detachable vacuum adapter to the back of the blade cover, Kobalt sticks it on the front away from you. It has approximately 45° swivel to help you manage the hose or adjust it for any wind you encounter. If you are using a saw without a hose, we recommend pointing the nozzle down to keep dust from getting on you.
Adapter is 1 1/4 inches in diameter.
