EGO LM2114SP 21" Self-Propelled Lawn Mower

Posted on April 28, 2023 by

EGO LM2114SP self-propelled lawn mower ready for 2023 mowing season

Considering buying a new battery powered lawn mower for the upcoming season? EGO has one of the strongest product lines with models ranging from entry-level customers to those who want the latest and greatest designs. The EGO LM2114SP Self-Propelled Lawn Mower is new for 2023 and hitting store shelves, and we're breaking down the nuts and bolts to see who it's best for.

cutting capacity

ego-lm2114sp - Self Propelled Lawn Mower Review

This EGO mower features a brushless motor that spins a 21-inch blade with very real gas displacement capability. It produces 6.0 ft-lbs of cutting torque and spins up to 2,800 RPM, giving you cutting performance comparable to a 140cc gas mower. Sound familiar? This is the same performance figure as the LM2125SP introduced with this model.

For us, this is perfect for regular maintenance pruning of St. Augustine grass as well as some of our healthier Florida Bahia grasses. Not to mention, it can also handle some overgrowth. Like most brushless lawn mowers, the motor will automatically increase its speed when it senses a heavier load. We did manage to stall the motor a few times in the densest overgrown areas, as we'd expect from a gas engine with similar performance.

Remember, if your lawn needs consistently higher performance, EGO makes more powerful mowers like the Select Cut XP.

cutting quality

cover blade

If you're familiar with the EGO Select Cut mowers, you'll notice that this model features a single blade rather than the stacked blade system of the higher-end range. Regardless of this fact, it still produces a very clean cut and leaves very little stragglers in its wake. If you're mowing at full speed in dense grass, you'll likely see more, so slow down in those areas to maintain cut quality.

As is typical of the EGO design, the mulching and bagging features work well for maintenance cuts (approximately 2 inches from the top). If you are cutting more than 4 inches, consider switching to the rear discharge chute.

If you're switching from a gas lawn mower, you'll notice that the rear discharge doesn't quite spread the clippings as well as the side discharge. However, by having more uninterrupted airflow under deck, the EGO gains better coverage and bagging characteristics than most, a tradeoff we're willing to make.

run

EGO battery

EGO estimates your maximum run time in light cutting conditions to be 50 minutes. Of course, grass height, type, whether it's wet, and even environmental factors come into play. We did our normal maintenance cuts, removed about 2 inches, and got a 50:22 from the 6.0Ah battery in the kit.

Here are the results you can expect for various cutting loads:

Approximate run time
light load 50 minutes
medium load 40 minutes
heavy object 25 minutes

EGO LM2114SP Self-Propelled Lawn Mower Design Notes

drive control

EGO LM2114SP Self-Propelled Lawn Mower Controller

The self-propelled system of this mower is very similar to that of the EGO LM2102, but with some useful tweaks. For the most part, the overall look is the same, but it's always the details that are the problem.

The dual toggle drive handles are slimmer and more ergonomic than previous generations, which makes them more comfortable for extended periods of use. Our favorite change is that EGO moved the drive speed control lever off the left side of the handle and put it front and center on the drive handle. While it's not a groundbreaking design, anything that limits the amount of extra motion you have to do while mowing is a plus in our book.

deck height

deck height adjustment

We like the one-point deck height adjustment, rather than the individual wheel adjustments we've seen on older push mowers. Cutting heights range from 1-1/4" all the way up to 4". This should cover whatever grass species you have in your lawn.

deck height setting Approximate cutting height
1 1-1/4 inches
2 1-1/2 inches
3 2 inches
4 2-1/2 inches
5 3 inches
6 3-1/2 inches
7 4 in.

LED headlight

This mower has a pair of LED headlights on the front of the battery housing. You can control the lights with the on/off button on the main control panel, so you can activate them on the fly in low light situations.

vertical storage

EGO continues to offer vertical storage for this mower and it couldn't be easier. Just press the green lever located on the left side onto the handle and swing it side to side. Although the handle can be retracted downward, it must be fully extended to activate the blade.

You can choose between two handle heights with the same lever. I'm six feet tall, but I actually prefer the lower height setting because it allows my arms to hang more naturally while mowing. Everyone in our office who tried it chose the most comfortable lower position.

Additional features

  • battery life meter
  • IPX4 waterproof

EGO LM2114SP Self-Propelled Lawn Mower Prices

Expect this model to appear at your favorite EGO retailers in early 2023. The kit (LM2114SP) comes with a 6.0Ah battery and is priced at $549. If you want the mower (LM2110SP) without battery and charger, expect it to cost around $479. Either way, EGO backs the mower with a 5-year warranty.

the bottom line

The EGO LM2114SP is an excellent mid-range self-propelled option in the EGO lineup. It's perfect for homeowners who are maintaining their weekly mowing volume and looking to upgrade from an entry-level mower but don't want to go all the way to the top price point. With its balance of performance, features, and price, we expect this model to be one of the best-selling models for customers trimming 1/4 acre to 1/3 acre homes.
