When you're looking at the cordless router landscape, you're probably expecting to find 12V models by now. However, the Bosch 12V Cordless Edge Router isn't bogged down by what we'd expect to find, offering a niche router in a compact frame.
advantage
- lightweight design
- wide drill line of sight
- Ergonomic design designed for edge routing
- Super fine 0.04 inch per turn fine adjustment
- 12V model only
shortcoming
- Niche edge functionality limits the type of routing you can do compared to other cordless models
- limited hours of operation
Brushless Motor
If you're making a cordless router, especially on a 12V platform, you'll have to take advantage of brushless motors. Bosch checked that box.
physical characteristics
Designing a cordless router like the Bosch 12V Cordless Edge Router begins with figuring out how to place the battery and motor. For 18V systems, sliding the battery pack onto the top of the router is the best option. 12V isn't much different, but with a stick battery instead of a slide, there's more leeway. Bosch put their battery at an angle to the front of the motor, it looks weird compared to other options.

This position puts your hand closer to the cutting edge and wraps your fingers around the front, giving you control as you pull the router through the grain. Rubber overmolding helps keep you gripped and provides some comfort.
Considering that the tool's only target is edge routing, the design works well. Even though it's quite different from the standard trim router design, it's not hard to find a comfortable grip.
Accessory Changes and Depth Adjustments
You'll need an included wrench to replace the router bit. To lock the chuck, simply pull out the red lever above it. You may need to rotate the collet slightly until you find the correct position.

Depth changes are very simple. A button on the left releases the base for coarse depth settings, and a thumb wheel below lets you make fine adjustments. On the right, turn the knob to lock the base at the depth you set.
size and weight
Considering the higher performance you can expect from a cordless router, its size and weight may entice you to choose this model. Dimensionally, it's 8.5 inches tall and 5.7 inches long without batteries. Of course, the shape is quite different from standard cordless models.
The router weighs only 2.2 lbs. There are a few other models that are closer to 2.5 pounds, but most of the best models are closer to 3 pounds or more.
Bosch 12V Cordless Edge Router Performance
To set a clear expectation, this is not a DIY router, nor is it designed to do things that a wired or 18V router can do in less runtime. This is the Palm Router or Edge Router. Operating at 13,000 RPM, well below what you'll see from a trim router, including the cordless end.

As long as you're using your router for light edge routing and finishing, it shouldn't be an issue. I did some testing of the router with a 1/4″ x 1/2″ beaded bit and a 22° x 3/8″ bevel bit and was impressed with the confidence the motor provided. Best performance from Bosch 12V Cordless Edge Router The key is to take your time, especially in hardwoods, and let the motor do the work.
Other Noteworthy Features
- Drop-off detection: The router automatically shuts down when it detects a drop-off
- Restart protection: Turn on the power switch to change the battery and the motor will not start
- Finger Barrier: Helps prevent accidental finger contact with bits and chucks
- Constant speed circuit: brushless motor automatically adjusts power with load
Bosch 12V Cordless Edge Router Price
As bare metal, this Bosch 12V router sells for $149. As we write this, there aren't any kits or combos available, so if you don't have other Bosch 12V tools, you'll need a battery and charger. Chances are you can get an 18V cordless router for a similar price, so if you think you could use more power and versatility, do your research.
the bottom line
The Bosch 12V Edge Router is an excellent solution for finishing trimming and trimming, especially for jobsite carpenters. When you produce most of your builds at the shop and have to make some minor adjustments during field installation, it can be helpful to take out this 2.2-pound router and leave the wired trim router on the truck or back at the shop. That said, there are other cordless routers in the same price range that offer higher performance, so make sure it's what you want before pulling the trigger.
