One of the best ways to get into a new battery platform is to buy a cordless tool combo kit. The best power tool combination kits give you the tools you need. It should also include several higher-capacity batteries, not just the entry-level ones.
Some manufacturers offer very comprehensive kits that can cost $1,000 or more. However, the most popular kits include the 4-6 core tools that every general contractor needs. which? Core tools include cordless drills, impact drivers, circular saws, and reciprocating saws. Most brands also tend to use small task lights. Others swap out their reciprocating saws for an oscillating multitool.
Some brands do much more than these 4 basic cordless tools. You'll see kits that include oscillating multi-tools, grinders, and more. But what we're looking for here is the smallest kit each brand offers that includes (where possible) these 4 core products – or something that gives a pro a really good starting point. We'll lay out our recommendations, then pick our best picks from some major tool brands.

DeWalt DCKTS599M2 FlexVolt Advantage 20V Brushless 5-Tool Combo Kit

When it comes to overall ergonomics, DeWalt tops the list—but it doesn't hurt to be powerful. These DeWalt FlexVolt Advantage tools provide a power boost when you use FlexVolt batteries. We love this tool bag because it incorporates useful tools and is very comfortable to hold.
This particular DeWalt kit includes the powerful DCF887 Impact Driver. You can also use the full size DCS386 FlexVolt Advantage Reciprocating Saw. Many kits include the DCS367 compact recip saw, which we found harder to get into tighter areas. Plus, drills, miter saws, and circular saws are ready for use with the DeWalt Tool Connect.

Makita XT616PT 18V LXT Brushless 6-Piece Combo Kit

Makita, DeWalt and Milwaukee really go head to head for the best overall in this group. At the end of the day, we just prefer the grouping and value in the Makita kit. All of the top kits utilize brushless motors and are very close in terms of performance specs. They also give you an all-around great tool and are a step above the rest when it comes to circular and reciprocating saws.
Makita, DeWalt, and Milwaukee also have very deep product lines, putting you on the platform of all cordless tools. When you jump into the Makita 18V LXT platform, you're looking at around $879, which is great value. It's also our pick for the best Makita power tool combo kit. They have bigger tool kits, but this is just right.

Milwaukee 3697-25 M18 FUEL 5 Tool Combo Kit

Value combines what you pay for. We had deals in mind when we found the best power tool combination kits for the money. We'd like to recommend a toolkit for them to build their own over time. In the end we decided to deliver this Milwaukee Tool combo kit.
We can't help but direct people to use the Milwaukee and 3697-25 combo kit as their benchmark tool. Milwaukee, like Makita and DeWalt, has a very deep product line. With so many custom tools for the plumbing and mechanical trades, we feel the Milwaukee 5 Tool Combo Kit is a solid recommendation – especially for anyone in the trade. In our opinion, this is the best Milwaukee cordless M18 tool kit you can buy if you want to build a system quickly.
Having said that, at $849, how on earth is this kit considered a value ? ? ? simple. Individually, you'll be spending around $1,500 or more for these flagship tools. Best of all, Milwaukee and Acme Tools often run holiday sales—keep an eye out for even more savings on those. Of course, if you're looking for something less expensive, see our recommendations for the best DIY tool kits, as well as a selection of kits by brand below.

Ryobi PSBCK06K ONE+ HP 18V Brushless 6-Tool Combo Kit

We are very impressed with the new Ryobi One+ HP tool line. As far as entry-level tools for the trade go, Ryobi remains the best value. While they don't quite match the build quality of brands like Milwaukee, DeWalt, or Makita, Ryobi backs their tools with a 3-year limited warranty. After purchasing this kit, add a larger circular saw and consider a full size circular saw. Still, for just $399, how do you beat the value of these tools?
We also like the value that comes with the options for the Kobalt 24V line of tools, and what you can find from Ridgid. Both offer high-performance brushless combo kits for less than $450. For Ridgid and Kobalt, the limitation is the number of tools available on their battery platforms. However, as they continue to expand, they will both become legitimate options for the main Pro platforms.
What is included:
- PSBID01 18V ONE+ HP Brushless 1/4" Impact Driver
- PSBDD01 18V ONE+ HP Brushless 1/2" Drill/Driver

Hart HPCK302BPTA 20V 3 Tool Combo Kit

While you'd think we might limit our recommendations to "full-size" tools, the 6-1/2-inch rings included in this 3-piece kit from Hart Tools work just fine. For a basic set of tools, this Hart combo can do more with less.
Ryobi may have the advantage in the number of products on its One+ 18V platform, but Hart is catching up. It also quickly expanded into lifestyle products that DIY enthusiasts love to have at home.
For $163, you get a very useful set of tools on a rapidly growing platform. Hart Tools has everything from drills, impact drivers, and saws to battery-operated fans and tire inflators. Get more information on the Hart Tools website.
Included in this kit:
- 20V electric drill/driver

Skil PWRCORE 12 Brushless 6 Tool Combo Kit

Getting a comprehensive 12V combo kit is actually quite difficult. However, if you wish to use 12V, the Skil has you covered. They do a great job of offering a wide range of tools in this category. The PWRCore 12 series seems like a good fit for those who want a smaller ergonomic light work tool. We especially like the inclusion of a 5.5-inch circular saw and right-angle impact. The kit also includes a pair of PWRCore 12V batteries. Almost as icing on the cake, they added a Skil 12V inflator, which we found to be an excellent product.
Once you purchase this kit, you may also want to add a Skil 12V jigsaw, and perhaps their 12V brushless reciprocating saw.
This proficient 12V starter kit sells for about $342, and we think it's a great entry into Skil Tools' rugged 12V system.
include:
- PWRCore 12 1/2″ Rig
- PWRCore 12 5-1/2″ Circular Saw
- Skil PWRCore 12 Right Angle Impact Driver

Bosch GXL18V-496B22 4-Piece Combo Kit
We love the ergonomic design of these Bosch power tools. They feel solid and comfortable. Picking up a Bosch, we often wonder why we don't use these tools more often. The quality of these tools also never seems to fail.
You'll love the build quality of this kit, but it only includes a compact recip saw and hammer drill. The Bosch Freak impact driver continues to impress, almost (almost!) making it feel like a 5-tool kit. Run out ASAP and grab a Bosch circular saw to round out this system. If Bosch is your brand, you can't go wrong with one for $349.

FlexVolt Advantage technology improves performance when using FlexVolt battery packs. We also like the key tools that DeWalt included in this kit. FLEX FXM401-2A 4 Tool 24V Brushless Combo Kit
This 4-tool combo kit from FLEX Tools offers three core tools and an LED work light. FLEX offers a variety of tool kits, and if you already own some FLEX 24V power tools, you can choose a different one. This particular kit includes the company's orbital reciprocating saw along with a drill and 2-speed impact driver. All three tools perform very well, though the company's flagship outperforms drills and impact drivers.

Following on from the XTR line of power tools, the Kobalt 24V brushless tools offer exceptional power at an affordable price. For $299, these tools come with a 5-year limited warranty, and you get a really nice starter kit for cordless power tools. Includes a full-size reciprocating saw, a brushless impact driver and drill bits. They even incorporated articulated LED lights. The 4Ah Extended Runtime Pack should serve a lot of purposes.
Whatever your stance on the Kobalt vs. Ridgid debate, both brands seem destined to serve professionals looking for value solutions. Professionals love them because they get a lot for their hard-earned money. We love them for the same reasons.

For $799, this Makita combo kit gives you a lot of value when stepping into the 18V LXT platform. Makita does have some bigger kits – actually bigger – if you really want to splurge. The Metabo HPT KC18DBFL2QFM Brushless 7-Tool Combo Kit gives you almost every cordless hand tool you need for cutting, drilling, and fastening. While an impact drill and a one-handed rotary saw will give you an acceptable level of performance, a three-hammer impact driver can push over 1800 inch-pounds of torque. The brushless 6-1/2" circular saw is also impressive. You also get an LED light, grinder, oscillating multi-tool, two 3Ah batteries, and a soft case.

Ridgid R96263 18V 6 Tool Combo Kit
This Ridgid 6 tool combo kit is an excellent value at $479. It also gives you a 3-year warranty and a lifetime service agreement. You'll get a full-size 7-1/4-inch circular saw, impact driver, orbital reciprocating saw, and solid hammer drill.
Ridgid clearly continues to represent one of the best values among professional grade brands. Performance wasn't quite as well-rounded as what we saw in Milwaukee and Makita, but there were some bright spots along with solid mid-level performance. The ergonomic design is different than some other brands that have a design that fits the contours of your hand. If we can find a downside to this kit, it's that you don't get brushless tools here – but once you're on the platform, you can upgrade at will. We do wish they added a new kit made specifically to work with their Ridgid Max Output batteries.
Included tools:
- Ridgid R86115 Brushless Hammer Drill
- R862311 Impact driver
- Ridgid R8657 7-1/4″ Circular Saw

Ryobi PSBCK06K ONE+ HP 18V Brushless 6-Tool Combo Kit
This best Ryobi combo kit is also our best value pick. It has 6 important tools and they all use HP brushless motors. This is not the case with most Ryobi combo kits. Amazing value at $435. It also gives you a 3-year warranty and a lifetime service agreement. You'll get a full-size 7-1/4-inch circular saw, impact driver, orbital reciprocating saw, and solid hammer drill.
What is included:
- PSBID01 18V ONE+ HP Brushless 1/4" Impact Driver
- PSBDD01 18V ONE+ HP Brushless 1/2" Drill/Driver
- PSBCS02 18V ONE+ HP Brushless Cutting Tool
- PSBRA02 18V ONE+ HP Brushless 3/8" Right Angle Drill
- PSBRS01 18V ONE+ HP Brushless One Hand Recip Saw
- PSBIW01 18V ONE+ HP Brushless 4 Mode 3/8 Inch Impact Wrench
- 2 x PBP002 1.5Ah Li-ion battery, charger, tool bag
The 4-tool combo kit consisting of a drill, impact driver, circular saw, and reciprocating saw has become the basis of most brands of "general contractor kits." It gives you the basics you need to cut, drill, fasten and demonstrate work before moving on to more powerful drivers and table saws. Want to start with a larger system? Check out our best 6 tool combo kits article.
What is the standard?
At a minimum, each kit needs to contain a drill (or impact drill), impact driver, and some kind of saw (preferably a circular saw). Our professional-grade kits go one step further. While our DIY tool combination kit suggestions might replace smaller circular saws or one-handed chop saws, professional kits are full-sized…usually. Lately, Bosch has had some humble kits, and if we wanted to stay up to date, we had to use a one-handed chop saw. Based on these recommendations, you do need to add some tools to achieve the baseline we expect.
We also recommend a 2-tool cordless combo kit for our 12V recommendation. Given the lack of 12V tool platforms in the market, we needed a solid foundation to build upon. Milwaukee's M12 platform offers this, but their larger M12 kits include older compact tools that we no longer recommend. Also, while Ridgid offers a 12V platform, it seems to be very limited. Makita seems to have shifted away from emphasizing its 12V CXT platform to its line of ultra-compact tools. That leaves DeWalt and Milwaukee Tool. Of these, we prefer Milwaukee because it has more trade-offs.
These aren't the most comprehensive kits from every brand, but it's the one that comes closest to the 4 key tools we're looking for. DeWalt is a good example – they have a brushless 6 tool kit that compares favorably to the Milwaukee and Makita, but they have a smaller kit that is closer to what we want. The other two did not. Maybe we'll have to go back and look at the best kits each brand has to offer in another article.
